There is no way to put this lightly: today, democracy took a direct hit from a corrupt Supreme Court. If you didn’t hear it, the Supreme Court issued a ruling today that shields former presidents from prosecution for official acts done as president.
A Corrupt Supreme Court
So, before getting too deep, we must understand how we got here. This couldn’t have happened without flipping the Supreme Court from a liberal-leaning to a hard right. How did that happen? For starters, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose health had been in decline, decided not to retire under the Obama administration. I don’t want to speculate why, but it seems that she wanted and expected Hillary Clinton to win and could choose her replacement. As we know, that did not work out. In addition, the Republicans blocked Barack Obama’s appointment of Merrick Garland to replace Antonin Scalia. They claimed that it was because it was an election year.
There were still ten months to go, and no legitimate reason this should have been blocked. Trump would end up nominating Neil Gorsuch, who would be confirmed. Next, Justice Anthony Kennedy unexpectedly announced his retirement, creating a second vacancy in the Supreme Court. In early July 2018, Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh, who, after some controversy and literally crying, was confirmed. This leads us to the misstep by RBG. With just a month before the election, she would sadly pass away. It was an election year, so the Republicans graciously reminded us that election years were not years to replace Supreme Court members. Just kidding, they are hypocrites and had no problem pushing Amy Coney Barrett into the court within the month.
None of that would have been possible had the Senate Republicans not changed the rule in 2017, allowing Justices to be confirmed by a simple majority rather than the supermajority previously required. Another change that should not have been allowed is that Supreme Court Justices are supposed to be impartial, and that rule forced them to find more centered candidates.
Democracy Took a Direct Hit
This ruling is critical because we have had 46 Presidents across 248 years. Never has this been an issue. Never has any president been so despicable that he would commit a prosecutable offense. The founders of our country fought so hard against the British to escape the monarchy and not have to answer to a king. Everything about our system was set up to ensure no single person would be above the law.
Today’s ruling by the corrupt Supreme Court turns the clock back 248 years. This ruling shows that the six Supreme Court members who voted for this lack a basic understanding of the foundations of this nation. Luckily, it was not made with Trump in office, so there is still time to fix this. However, one thing is certain: Trump can never be allowed to reside in the White House again. This means that no Republican should ever hold office again. It is clear to me that these people are not pro-democracy or pro-America. They want to go back to having kings, which cannot happen.
How to Fight a Corrupt Supreme Court
Everyone says it, but you must contact your local reps AND senators. This can’t be a case of “oh, I will” and you don’t, or “other people will” – we ALL need to do it and do it ASAP. We cannot turn back the clock on the country and undo 248 years of progress. Biden needs to use his newfound powers to act immediately. We need to encourage this through our reps and senators. If you are in the red states, you are on the front lines and must push your Republican senators and representatives. They cannot say they support this country if they want a king. That was not one of the founding principles.
We also need to organize and march on the Supreme Court where possible. They need to know enough is enough. Encourage your reps and senators to support the articles of impeachment that AOC is going to bring. Finally, VOTE! Talk to everyone you know, especially any non-voters you know. Don’t leave anyone on the sidelines in this fight. I get it, for years these two parties have told us “This election is the most important of our lifetime, serious this time!” Because of this, many are hesitant to believe it, but this time it is true. This is not a fix that can happen before the election, and a Trump with the power to kill is not a Trump anyone needs.
The Future of the Corrupt Supreme Court
Things need to change in the Supreme Court. My idea for how to handle Supreme Court Justice nominations in the future is they need to be nominated by the President, maybe make 3 to 4 selections. They hold a special election, and the American People vote for them. We are the ones most impacted by their decisions, and they should be used to decide if the nominee is qualified. I also think term limits should be enacted. These are lifetime appointments, so this is even more important if we, the people, don’t have a say outside of the President we voted for. Regardless, it is time for this process to be rethought, for we can’t have a Supreme Court that doesn’t understand the importance of checks and balances.
Conclusion
We took a hit, but the ship isn’t sinking yet. Time is short, and action is imperative. We cannot stand by and watch this unfold anymore. Get involved and do anything you can to fight this miscarriage of justice. Call and write your representatives and senators, get friends and family involved, and let’s fight for our country!
